Reopening of the Door of the Basilica of San Gennaro extra moenia
The project: San Gennaro extra moenia
With the reopening of the Basilica of San Gennaro Extra-Moenia in 2008, the Catacombs of San Gennaro were reopened to the Sanità district, allowing tourists who visit them to discover the Sanità District. The decade-long abandonment and closure of the Basilica had always left a significant access point to the district missing, which, due to the construction of the Sanità Bridge, found itself practically isolated.
The reopening of the new entrance to the Catacombs was followed by the creation of a new lighting system in 2009 by Officina dei Talenti, a cooperative of young people from the Sanità District. It uses LED technology to preserve the vast pictorial and mosaic heritage.
Since 2006, the management of the Catacombs has been entrusted to the cooperative La Paranza, a group of young people from the Sanità District, who, thanks to their enthusiasm and professionalism, have made the Catacombs a model of management known at national and international level, creating jobs for over 40 young people in the area.
