Sanitansamble
Music has a universal language and is an extraordinary vehicle for the education of young people and children living in areas of social disadvantage. The orchestra is like a small society: playing together is an opportunity for joy as well as personal growth, a way to learn the fundamental values of civic life—respect for others, sharing, solidarity, rules, and discipline. The Sanitansamble project has been operating in Naples since 2008. It draws inspiration from the educational method of Venezuela’s El Sistema founded by José Abreu, but above all from the tradition of the four Ancient Neapolitan Conservatories, which since the 16th century fulfilled an ethical and social role by welcoming foundlings and disadvantaged children, offering them high-level musical training and thus integrating them into the thriving music and theatre industry of the time, creating a Neapolitan musical culture that was exported all over the world.
Born in the Rione Sanità and established as the Sanitansamble Association in 2014, the project has, for the past three years, extended its work to the Forcella neighborhood. These two areas of the historic city center are often associated with stories of degradation and marginalization; yet they are rich in an extraordinary historical and artistic heritage and, above all, are home to countless children—a true human treasure that deserves support, trust, and recognition.
