San Gennaro extra moenia - the project
With the reopening of the Basilica of San Gennaro Extra Moenia in 2008, the Catacombs of San Gennaro were reopened to the Sanità district, allowing visitors in particular to discover the Rione Sanità. With the abandonment and decades-long closure of the Basilica, the neighborhood lost an important access point and, with the construction of the Sanità Bridge, found itself virtually isolated.
Following the reopening of the new entrance to the Catacombs, a new lighting system was installed in 2009 by Officina dei Talenti, a cooperative of young people from the Rione Sanità, using LED technology to preserve the extensive pictorial and mosaic heritage. Since 2006, the management of the Catacombs has been entrusted to the La Paranza cooperative, a group of young people from the Rione Sanità, which—thanks to enthusiasm and professionalism—has turned the Catacombs into a management model recognized nationally and internationally, creating employment for over 40 local young people.
